Activated Charcoal

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is a highly porous, fine black powder made from carbon-rich materials like coconut shells, bamboo, or hardwood that have been heated at high temperatures to increase absorption capacity. In skincare, it’s known for its detoxifying, deep-cleansing, and oil-balancing properties, making it a go-to ingredient for acne-prone and oily skin types.

Activated Charcoal

Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture, as it can absorb contaminants from the air. Keep in an airtight container to maintain effectiveness. Shelf life: Indefinite if stored properly (does not expire but can degrade in quality if exposed to humidity or contaminants).

Unrefined Activated Charcoal: Less processed, may contain some larger particles.
Refined Activated Charcoal: Ultra-fine powder, ideal for skincare applications.

Deep cleans & detoxifies: Draws out toxins, dirt, and pollutants.
Balances oil production: Absorbs excess sebum without stripping the skin.
Unclogs & minimises pores: Helps remove impurities and blackheads.
Gently exfoliates: Provides mild physical exfoliation for smoother skin.
Non-toxic & natural: Safe for most skin types when used in moderation.

Ultra-fine, soft, and lightweight powder. Highly absorbent with a dry, chalky feel.

Odourless

Not water-soluble: Suspends in water rather than dissolving.
Compatible with clays, oils, aloe vera, and essential oils for enhanced skincare benefits.

Detoxifies & Purifies: Binds to dirt, toxins, and impurities for a deep clean.
Controls Oil & Acne: Helps reduce breakouts by absorbing excess sebum and bacteria.
Unclogs Pores & Reduces Blackheads: Helps lift impurities trapped in the skin.
Gently Exfoliates: Removes dead skin cells and smooths texture.
Brightens Skin: Leaves skin looking clearer and more even-toned.

Around 7.0, making it safe for most skin types.

Activated charcoal doesn’t actually absorb into the skin, but it acts as an adsorbent. It draws out impurities, toxins, and excess oil from the skin’s surface, making it effective in cleansing and purifying the skin. However, it doesn’t “absorb” like oils or liquids.

0.1-3% in cleansers, scrubs, and face masks.
1-3% in soaps and exfoliating skincare products.

Use 1-2 times per week for best results.
Combine with clays (like bentonite or kaolin) to enhance detox effects.

Follow up with a moisturiser to restore hydration.
