Mouthwash is a common part of many people’s oral hygiene routine, but not all mouthwashes are created equal. Unlike harsh commercial options, a natural clove mouthwash supports your oral health without disrupting the balance of beneficial bacteria in your mouth—something conventional products often harm, negatively impacting your overall wellbeing.
The Hidden Dangers of Store-Bought Mouthwash
Many mainstream mouthwashes contain alcohol, chlorhexidine, and synthetic antibacterial agents that claim to kill 99.9% of germs. While this might sound beneficial, research suggests otherwise.
How Conventional Mouthwash Harms Your Health
- Disrupts Beneficial Bacteria
- Negatively Affects Nitric Oxide Production
- Dr. Ben Bikman, a metabolic scientist and author of Why We Get Sick, explains that nitric oxide is crucial for blood vessel health, regulating blood pressure, and supporting cardiovascular function. He notes that antiseptic mouthwash disrupts beneficial oral bacteria needed for nitrate conversion, which may increase the risk of metabolic issues.
- Increases Risk of Diabetes and Obesity
- Studies show that regular use of antiseptic mouthwashes is linked to an increased risk of metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance. By disrupting oral bacteria, mouthwash interferes with how our bodies regulate glucose and energy production.
- Causes Dry Mouth and Irritation
- Alcohol-based mouthwashes strip the mouth of natural moisture, leading to dry mouth (xerostomia), bad breath, and irritation of sensitive tissues.
Given these concerns, it’s time to consider a natural, non-toxic alternative.
Why Cloves Are the Perfect Ingredient for a Natural Mouthwash
Cloves have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine for their powerful medicinal properties. Here’s why they make a great base for a DIY mouthwash:
- Antibacterial & Antifungal Properties
- Reduces Inflammation and Pain
- Eugenol also acts as a natural analgesic, making clove mouthwash an excellent remedy for gum pain and oral inflammation.
- Balances Oral pH
- Cloves help maintain a balanced oral pH, preventing excessive acidity that contributes to enamel erosion and bad breath.
- Promotes Gum Health
- The antioxidants in cloves reduce oxidative stress, helping to prevent gum disease and promoting stronger teeth.
