DIY Face Serum: Nourish Your Skin Naturally

In today’s skincare world, DIY face serums have become a must-have for those seeking natural, customisable solutions. Face serums are lightweight, nutrient-rich formulas that absorb easily and target specific skin concerns with precision. The best part? You can create your own natural face serum at home tailored perfectly to your unique skin needs.

Whether you want to combat dryness, sensitivity, or dullness, this DIY approach empowers you to nourish your skin naturally without harsh chemicals.

Why Choose a DIY Face Serum?

Creating your own DIY face serum offers several fantastic benefits:

  • Customisation: Commercial serums don’t always cater for your individual skin type. DIY lets you choose oils that meet your personal needs.
  • Natural Ingredients: You control exactly what goes into your serum—no unnecessary additives or synthetic chemicals.
  • Cost-Effective: High-end serums can be expensive, but making your own is budget-friendly and lasts for months.
  • Eco-Friendly: By reusing containers and selecting sustainable oils, you’re supporting environmentally responsible skincare.

Understanding the Basics of a Face Serum

A well-formulated natural face serum usually contains:

  • Base Oils: Provide lightweight hydration and quick absorption.
  • Nutrient-Dense Oils: Address specific skin concerns, like dryness or irritation.

For the best results, aim for a ratio where base oils make up at least 60% of your blend. This ensures the serum remains light and non-greasy.

Best Base Oils for DIY Serums

Start with a 50/50 blend of:

  • MCT Coconut Oil: Lightweight, absorbs quickly, and suits most skin types.
  • Jojoba Oil: Mimics the skin’s natural oils (sebum), helping to balance and nourish.

This combination creates a silky, hydrating foundation for your custom serum.

How to Tailor Your Serum

For Dry Skin

Dry skin needs extra nourishment. Add 1–2 drops of the following oils to your base:

  • Rosehip Oil: Rich in vitamin A, boosts hydration and regeneration.
  • Castor Oil: Deeply moisturises and locks in moisture.
  • Carrot Seed Oil: Full of antioxidants, revitalises tired skin.
  • Myrrh Oil: Hydrates and softens fine lines.
  • Ylang Ylang Oil: Balances oil production and promotes radiance.
  • Rose Oil: Soothes and moisturises naturally.

For Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin benefits from calming, anti-inflammatory ingredients. Add 1–2 drops of:

  • Rosehip Oil: Calms redness and inflammation.
  • Geranium Oil: Strengthens and balances the skin barrier.
  • Frankincense Oil: Gently soothes irritation and promotes healing.
  • Neroli Oil: Hydrates and reduces sensitivity.
  • Sandalwood Oil: Offers deep hydration and a calming scent.
  • Chamomile Oil: Eases inflammation and irritation.
  • Lavender Oil: Classic remedy for soothing and repairing sensitive skin.

Ingredients

  • Base Blend: 1 part MCT coconut Oil, 1 part Jojoba Oil (leave about 1cm at the top)

  • Optional Additions for Dry Skin: (Add 1-2 drops each)- Rosehip oil, castor oil, carrot seed oil, myrrh oil, ylang ylang oil, rose oil

  • Optional Additions for Sensitive Skin: (Add 1-2 drops each) – Rosehip oil, geranium oil, frankincense oil, neroli oil, sandalwood oil, chamomile oil, lavender oil

  • NOTE: limit to 2-4 targeted oils that match your main skin concern as too many different oils may irritate and overwhelm the skin.

Directions

  • Prepare your container: Use a clean, dark glass roller or dropper bottle to protect the oils from light and prolong shelf life.
  • Make the base blend:
Fill the bottle three-quarters full with a 50/50 mixture of MCT coconut oil and jojoba oil.
  • Add targeted oils:
Based on your skin needs (dry or sensitive), add 1–2 drops each of your selected active oils.
  • Mix well:
Secure the lid and gently shake the bottle to combine all the ingredients evenly.

Notes

  • Store properly:
Keep your serum in a cool, dark place to preserve its potency. Shake lightly before each use if needed.
  • Application Tips:
Apply 2–3 drops to clean skin in the morning or evening.
Gently massage in using clean fingertips, focusing on dry or sensitive areas.
Always perform a patch test before first use.
  • Shelf Life Estimate:
6 to 12 months — if stored properly (in a cool, dark place, using a dark glass bottle, and avoiding contamination).
Key Factors That Affect Shelf Life:
    – Jojoba oil is very stable (it’s actually a wax, not a true oil) and can last up to 2 years on its own.
    – MCT coconut oil is also highly stable and resistant to oxidation.
    – Essential oils (like rosehip, frankincense, lavender) can vary, but when diluted properly in carrier oils, they help extend the serum’s freshness.
    – Exposure to light, heat, and air will shorten the life significantly.
    – Contamination (e.g., touching the dropper to your face) can introduce bacteria — so using a dropper bottle carefully will help it last longer.

Bonus Tip: Black Seed Oil for Skin Health

If you’re on a health journey, particularly recovering from issues like mould exposure, black seed oil can be a powerful ally. While it’s not part of the standard face serum recipe, black seed oil’s detoxifying and healing properties make it an excellent addition to your broader wellness and skincare routine.

The Beauty of DIY Skincare

Making your own DIY face serum isn’t just about great skin—it’s a mindful act of self-care. By choosing natural ingredients that work for you, you’re investing in healthy, glowing skin and a more sustainable beauty routine.

Whether you’re nourishing dry skin, calming sensitivity, or simply enjoying the creativity of natural skincare, this DIY face serum is the perfect place to start.

Embrace the process—and let your skin shine with love and attention.
