Petroleum Alternatives: Why We Must Stop Using Byproducts

In today’s world, petroleum byproducts are everywhere. From the petrol that powers our cars to the plastic that wraps our food, petroleum is deeply embedded in our daily lives. However, why we should stop using petroleum byproducts goes beyond environmental concerns—it’s crucial for protecting our health too. One area where petroleum is particularly common is in personal care products, appearing in the form of petroleum jelly, lotions, and other skincare items. While these products may offer temporary benefits, they often come at a hidden cost to both our wellbeing and the environment.
This is why the demand for petroleum alternatives in skincare is growing—people are seeking healthier, more natural options that support both their bodies and the planet.

The Problem with Petroleum Byproducts

Petroleum is a non-renewable resource, meaning it cannot be replenished once depleted. Extracting and processing petroleum causes significant environmental damage, from devastating oil spills to heavy air pollution from refineries.

Beyond environmental issues, petroleum byproducts—such as mineral oils, paraffin wax, and petroleum jelly (often sold under brands like Vaseline)—are widely used in personal care products. These substances, derived from crude oil, are cheap and abundant, but they pose potential risks to human health.

Petroleum jelly, for instance, may help moisturise the skin temporarily but also forms a barrier that traps dirt and toxins. Over time, it can clog pores, contribute to skin irritation, and even cause breakouts. Additionally, petroleum-based ingredients are often processed with chemical solvents, leaving behind contaminants that can be absorbed through the skin.

Some studies have indicated that petroleum byproducts may contain carcinogenic impurities like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which have been linked to cancer risk. Although some companies claim their products are purified, the concerns around regular use remain.

Why Choose Petroleum Alternatives?

Switching to natural skincare alternatives is better for both the planet and your health. Ingredients like beeswax, coconut oil, and olive oil have been trusted for centuries for their healing, moisturising, and soothing properties.

Instead of exposing your skin to petroleum derivatives, natural oils and waxes work with your body’s own systems to nourish and protect the skin without introducing harmful chemicals.

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil

  • 1/4 cup olive oil (or substitute with almond oil, jojoba oil etc)

  • Optional: 10-15 drops of essential (such as lavender or tea tree)

Directions

  • Prepare a Double Boiler:
Set up a double boiler by filling a small pot with water and placing a heatproof bowl on top (without touching the water).
  • Melt the Beeswax:
Add the beeswax to the bowl and melt it over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the Oils:
Once melted, add the coconut oil and olive oil. Stir gently until fully combined.
  • Add Essential Oils (Optional):
Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then add essential oils and stir through.
  • Pour and Set:
Pour the mixture into clean jars or containers. Allow to cool at room temperature until solid (about 1–2 hours).

Notes

  • Store your homemade petroleum jelly alternative in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, such as a bathroom cabinet or bedroom drawer. If kept properly sealed and out of extreme temperatures, it should remain fresh and effective for up to 6 months

Benefits of Natural Ingredients

  • Beeswax:
Forms a breathable barrier on the skin, locking in moisture while allowing the skin to heal naturally. It’s also antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.
  • Coconut Oil:
Rich in fatty acids that deeply nourish and hydrate the skin. Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties.
  • Olive Oil:
Loaded with antioxidants and vitamin E, olive oil supports skin regeneration and soothes irritation.

This natural blend moisturises and protects your skin without clogging pores or exposing you to toxic chemicals.

The Role of Pure Gum Spirits of Turpentine

Another lesser-known natural remedy is pure gum spirits of turpentine, a traditional solution used for a variety of health applications. Derived from pine resin, turpentine has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and pain-relieving properties.

When used appropriately, pure gum spirits of turpentine offer several health benefits:

Health Benefits of Turpentine:

Anti-Inflammatory:
Helps relieve sore muscles and reduce swelling.

Respiratory Relief:
Used in steam inhalations or rubs, turpentine can assist in clearing congestion from colds, bronchitis, or sinus infections.

Antimicrobial Properties:
A natural antiseptic, ideal for minor cuts and abrasions when properly diluted.

Boosting Circulation:
Helps stimulate blood flow when applied topically to sore or stiff areas.

Immune Support:
Some suggest it may aid the body’s natural detoxification processes when used carefully under professional guidance.

Note: Turpentine must be used properly and sparingly. Always research carefully or seek professional advice before use.

Why We Need to Try Petroleum Alternatives

The extraction, processing, and usage of petroleum byproducts pose clear risks to both human health and the environment. Fortunately, by choosing natural skincare alternatives, you can make a positive impact.

Ingredients like beeswax, coconut oil, and olive oil provide the same or better benefits without the health risks, while natural remedies like pure gum spirits of turpentine offer safe, effective support for wellness when used responsibly.

Choosing natural, sustainable products helps protect our bodies from toxic chemicals and reduces the carbon footprint associated with petroleum extraction and manufacturing.

Final Thoughts

It’s time to step away from petroleum byproducts and embrace nature’s healing power.
Whether you’re making your own skincare products or exploring traditional remedies like turpentine, these small changes create a healthier, more eco-friendly lifestyle.

By making conscious choices, we can reduce our reliance on petroleum, protect our wellbeing, and move towards a cleaner, greener future—one product at a time.
