Washing Soda

Washing soda, also known as sodium carbonate, is a strong alkaline cleaning agent used in household and industrial cleaning. It is a natural mineral derived from the ashes of plants or chemically processed from sodium chloride (salt). It is highly effective at breaking down grease, removing stains, softening water, and boosting laundry detergent performance.

Sodium Carbonate

Storage: store in a dry, airtight container to prevent moisture absorption. Keep away from direct sunlight and humidity.
Shelf life: Indefinite if stored properly.

Refined

Not essential, but highly beneficial in eco-friendly cleaning recipes, laundry detergents, and DIY household cleaners due to its powerful degreasing and stain-removing properties.

Fine, white, crystalline powder. Slightly gritty texture.

Odourless

Highly soluble in water
Not soluble in oils
Works well in alkaline-based recipes but should not be mixed with acids unless a reaction is intended.

Breaks down grease and grime
Softens hard water, enhancing soap effectiveness
Removes stubborn stains (e.g., coffee, tea, wine)
Neutralises odours

11.0 (highly alkaline)

Laundry Booster: ½ cup per load
All-Purpose Cleaner: 1-2 tablespoons per litre of water
Stain Removal Paste: 2 parts washing soda + 1 part water
Heavy-Duty Grease Removal: Sprinkle directly on greasy areas, scrub with warm water

White powder or small crystals

✅Powerful degreaser & stain remover
✅ Eco-friendly & biodegradable
✅ Boosts laundry detergent effectiveness
✅ Softens hard water naturally
✅ Safe alternative to harsh chemical cleaners

❌ Highly alkaline (pH ~11), can cause skin irritation
❌ Absorbs moisture easily, leading to clumping
❌ Can damage delicate fabrics if used excessively
❌ Not safe for aluminium, waxed surfaces, or some natural stones

Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate): Milder and safer for delicate surfaces
Borax: Similar cleaning properties, but more controversial in safety discussions
Hydrogen Peroxide: Works well for stain removal and disinfecting
Vinegar (Acetic Acid): Acidic alternative for cleaning, but should not be mixed directly with washing soda

Always dissolve in water before use to prevent residue.
Do not mix with acids (e.g., vinegar, citric acid) unless an immediate reaction is needed.
Use gloves when handling, as it can cause skin irritation.
Store in an airtight container to prevent clumping from humidity.

For clogged drains: Pour washing soda down the drain, followed by hot water.
For burnt pots & pans: Sprinkle washing soda, add hot water, and let sit before scrubbing.
For DIY laundry detergent: Mix with baking soda, borax, and grated soap for an effective homemade detergent.
For tile grout cleaning: Create a paste with washing soda and water, apply, and scrub with a brush.
